Dave Jaffer's fake Awards ceremony of SXSW 2011

You know what? This SXSW recap needs some kind of awards ceremony. As always, I’m happy to indulge such folly. (Hey, if the Junos get to, I get to.)
With considerable pomp, circumstance and Kanye-do attitude, I present the definitive fake awards of SXSW 2011.
The ‘How Hadn’t This Happened Yet?’ Award: Co-winners Dave Jaffer and Stefane Campbell.
Stef and I have been co-workers for years. We work together on the M For Montreal program(s) and are the two in-house music writers here at Citeeze. But the first time we actually met, face to face, was in Austin, Texas last week.
The Best Outfits Award: Austra
When you’re unsure whether the costumes in front of you are more sci-fi or more porn, you’re in a good place.
The Hot Mess Award: Alison Mosshart (The Kills)
Like there was any real competition.
The Best Interview Award: Sean MacGillivray
I saw my buddy Sean (Jenn Grant, Classified) for the first time in years at SXSW. As always, he was in good spirits, and the interview I did with him proved he was a man of considerable sophistication and heart.
The Tantrum Award: Odd Future (Los Angeles, CA)
Around 3 songs into their set at Buffalo Billiards, Odd Future’s leader Tyler, the Creator went off, furiously berating members of the crowd, the sound techs, the club and Billboard before storming off. It’s almost hard to believe he’s 19…
The Douchebag Award: Ben Weasel
The Screeching Weasel frontman sucker-punched a female fan (in the face) after being a severe jerk for the preceding hour. When the club owner intervened, he punched her too.
The Pariah Award: Ben Weasel
In the days after the incident, countless bands pulled out of Chicago’s WeaselFest, and Screeching Weasel’s other members quit the band citing the violent incident as the reason. It’s lonely at the, um, bottom.
The Best Dressed Award: Mos Def
I saw him walking around Saturday wearing a black and white ensemble…oh who am I kidding? The best-dressed award of this or any festival goes to Diamond Rings, whose Expos-oriented ensemble from March 16 made countless staubs rusty.
The ‘Uh, Thanks?’ Award: The Perez Hilton party
This tweet from Chromewaves’ Frank Yang sums up the opinion of many.
And, to conclude, some rapid fire winners…
The Free Grub Award: Canadian Blast BBQ
The Free Hooch Award: The Macallan Registrants Lounge
Best Street Taco Award: The family op. directly across from Barbarella
Best Slice Award: Hoboken Pie
Best New Friend Award (male): Yannick Cimon Matter (Get A Room)
Best New Friend Award (female): Jessica Louise Dye (from Lightfoot)
Most Animated MC Award: Sims (Doomtree)
Guitarist-Having-An-Orgasm Award: Patrick Krief (The Dears)
High on Life Award: Rich Aucoin
Random Discovery Award: Shunda K
