David Martel, Neutral Milk Hotel, Memory Tapes & the Hard Summer Tour

Oh Montreal, right now I actually kind of feel sorry for us. Not in any real way, mind you, but there is a sort of sadness attendant to early August in Montreal.
The festivals, for the most part, have come and gone. With Just For Laughs done, it’s not likely you will see Russell Peters (or Russell Brand, or Russell Howard for that matter) walking around on, say, St. Denis. Osheaga happened, with an emphasis on the “ed” at the end of that word, so whether you were hoping to catch a glimpse of Janelle Monáe (who was as good as I said she was going to be) or get married by the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, you’re out of luck.
Still, it’s not as if there are tumbleweeds blowing around town and no one in the streets. It’s not Detroit.
August is not without its charms—it just kind of looks that way. Want to see the pudding the proof is in? Read on to see just what kind of excellence is unfolding over the next week.
Christina Martin will join David Martel and Will Driving West at Divan Orange on August 9. If you haven’t read what Martel and WDW’s David Ratté had to say to Citeeze for still-pertinent pieces written in the recent past by yours truly, get on it.

DOM — who arrived and left SXSW with their considerable buzz intact—rock Il Motore on August 10. I can’t say that I totally dig ‘em, but there’s definitely something to this band, who are named after their interesting frontman who has gone on record saying he wants to be the “Madonna of garage rock.” If his falsetto is any sign, he’s about half way there.
Also: Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum is at Cabaret Mile End on August 10, but that show’s sold out. That said, they did release another 20 tickets Monday…
Memory Tapes, aka Dayve Hawk, has seemingly survived my short-lived fascination with Chillwave. He plays at Club Lambi with Golden Isles on August 12. Even if you don’t know or like these acts, I’d still suggest you go because Lambi is run by the sweetest man in Montreal.
Lastly but not leastly, the HARD Summer Tour invades the SAT this weekend (August 14). Headlined by German duo Digitalism—who will play with a live drummer I’ve heard tell—it promises to be a flat-out sweat fest for all y’all electro freaks. Unfortunately, Caspa, who was supposed to be in attendance, won’t be. I suppose that’s what happens when you break your leg. Other names on the bill: Jack Beats and Destructo (whose remix of “Reeperbahn” is dope).
