Hexes and Ohs, The Balconies & David Martel: What are they fans of?

All of Montreal is snapping and crackling these days, as it’s about time for POP. Forgive the groan-worthy intro or don’t, it don’t make no never mind to me—not with the weight of the voices I’ve got in store. See, I figured I could tell you why I’m excited for POP Montreal, and why, and what I planned on seeing, but I’m bored to death of myself and can only assume you are too. That’s why I enlisted some POP performers to tell you what’s what.
So, how are artists feeling just before the festival gets going?
“I'm excited!” says the beautiful Anna Rose. “Maybe a little bloated too, but I ate a big dinner last night! I really love Montreal—it's one of my favorite cities in the world, so to play my first show in Canada in such a gorgeous place and during POP Montreal seems like a dream. It will be a great show! I'm planning something very special.”
(If Rose’s name sounds familiar it’s because she’s the one who did that amazing, dark cover of Arcade Fire’s “My Body Is A Cage.”)
Hexes and Ohs’ Edmund Lam says that he’s “excited and a little nervous.” Why? “We took some time off last year but now we're back with gusto. After five years of playing predominantly as a duo, we've finally expanded to a full band.”
Fandom is a lovely thing, as we all know. Want to know what artists are excited to see when they get to be fans?
Lam: “I'm most looking forward to ‘Peter Hook plays Joy Division'. Along with New Order, they are pretty much my all-time favorite band, plus I've never had the chance to see either play live, so I'm expecting it to be a lifelong concert-going highlight. After that, I'm probably going to Tahiti 80, the Balconies and The Adam Brown.”
The Balconies’ Liam Jaeger is stoked on the Breezes—and self-promotion. “Heard lots of good things about these guys and we're sharing the stage on Wednesday the 21st at Petit Campus!” He says he’s also stoked for Charlotte Cornfield, Pat Jordache, Metz and Burning Love, about whom he says “haven't seen Chris Colohan since Cursed, but his bands always kicks ass.”
But seriously, who do you wish would be up front for one of your shows?
David Martel: “Arcade Fire. Would be great to meet some of those gals and guys. I've always felt the creative, musical side was always priority number one. [They’re] just the kind of people I’d love to sit down and bounce ideas off.”
Lam: “Peter Hook, obviously. Though he may start noticing how much we've ripped off their sound.”
Rose: “Any act and every act!”
Jaeger: “Andrew W.K.”
Rich Aucoin: “Andrew W.K. His energy is fucking intensely amazing.”
