Upcoming new exhibit at the McCord Museum

Montreal’s McCord Museum can be forgiven if the title of their upcoming new exhibit sounds like a Pixar movie; they’re marketing to a niche crowd… and their parents.
It’s called Toys 2, and with Christmas just around the corner, decorations and displays spreading through the malls, holiday tunes creeping into the soundscape, it seems appropriate. And since earlier this week the Canadian Toy Testing Council (boy, would I love to work for them) released their annual report on the toys of the future, it seems fitting to offer a look at the toys of the past.
The title actually reflects the fact that this is the museum’s second exhibition of its kind, and builds on the success of last year’s Toys exhibit. The new one also includes an interactive game of cat and mouse, literally.
The McCord will dip into its own toy box, and dust off their collection of more than 200 toys dating back, in some cases, about 150 years. If last year’s exhibit is anything to go by, it’s an opportunity for kids to be fascinated by what their moms and dads used to play with as kids, and for nostalgic parents to journey back through the mists of their own histories.
And as for the game of cat and mouse, everyone gets a magnifying glass, and is called upon to help a cat find the mice she’s hunting.
Many of the McCord’s exhibits are interactive. And the museum is, and always has been, a great place to spend an afternoon with the family. They hold one of the largest collections of historical artifacts anywhere, and are committed to preserving the history and culture of Canada, especially First Nations.
The Toys 2 exhibit runs from November 18 to March 11 of next year, so there is plenty of time to take it in as many times as you wish. And depending on when you go, there are a number of activities planned, including a Santa Claus parade, visual arts workshop, and a winter discovery activity with igloos and polar bears.
The museum is in the heart of downtown Montreal, housed in what had one time been McGill University’s student union building. When his vast collection of artifacts became too much for collector David McCord, he left everything to the university and by extension to you. It’s a great place to visit anytime. But since ‘tis just about the season pop in now to put yourself in the mood.
