The worst meals of my life have been endured in touristy restaurants. I'm haunted still by the memory of sour chocolate mousse in a Paris bistro, curdled carbonara in a Montepulciano trattoria, molten foie gras in a Sarlat café, sinewy beef stew in a London pub, and an "off" fish soup at a Bandol seaside eatery. And then there were those cold and crusty deep-fried lamb's testicles at a hole-in-the-wall in Nice. Mind you, I can't take the blame for most of those meals as my friends did ...
